G7 statement: deep differences on climate and the oceans
On 8 and 9 June, the G7 Summit was held in Charlevoix, in Canada. Whereas Germany, Canada, France, Italy, Japan, the UK and the European Union reasserted in the final statement their wish to implement the « Paris Agreement thanks to ambitious climate action», as for the United States, they confirmed that they will ''continue to promote energy security and economic growth in a way that improves the health of the oceans and the environment, while at the same time increasing public-private investment in energy infrastructures and technologies in all the available sources of energy''. Another point of divergence: the commitment to the fight against the plastic pollution of the oceans.
The G7 gave special mention to this point by including in its statement a target of 100% recycling of plastics by 2030 – a proposal rejected by the USA and Japan.
